News…..and have a good holiday!

October 23, 2009 esbsec Leave a comment

The first half of this semester has gone so quickly,  and I hope that you will all have a very enjoyable and relaxing October holiday. As soon as we get back the first reports of the year will be completed and they will go home (unless there are technical problems) as planned on Friday November 6th.  These reports are for Years 1-6 only. Year 7 students do not get a report at this time of year, but they should all ask their teachers how they are getting on.

November and December will be very busy months with events leading up to Christmas. Year 6 have exams in December, and Year 5 and 7 need to get prepared for their exams in January. Year 4 will also have B tests in January, and I would welcome any feedback positive or negative from parents of students in Year 4 about how the week of tests has gone recently. There will also be some major musical events during this time with The Battle of the Bands at the end of November, and Live Aid on the last day before the holidays.

The Code of Conduct which was introduced as a pilot project in April of this year has now been accepted by the Secondary Education Committee, and we have been encouraged by better attendance and punctuality. I have also been standing at the gates most mornings to check on students arriving late, and would like to ask all members of the school community to help in any way possible to make sure that students arrive on time, have all their books and equipment with them (especially sports equipment!), and that they get to lessons punctually and do all the tasks and homework set by the teachers.

Teachers are busy in the planning stages of the larger school trips which will all take place during the week of May 3rd 2010. The year 2 students will go to Texel, which has become a well-established and successful tradition. The Year 4 and 5 Language 2 groups are planning trips to London, Paris and Berlin. The Year 6 students are going to Valencia, a trip which has also taken place before.  Such trips are a big responsibility for the teachers, and we hope that you will give them your full support in the planning.

Please check the school calendar at the end of the first week back after the holidays because there will be a few minor changes. I will inform you on the blog when this happens.

Enjoy your holiday, and thanks for all of your support during the year so far!

L1 English London theatre trip

October 16, 2009 esbsec Leave a comment

Last Thursday we took the train from Alkmaar to Schiphol. We then flew to London at 9.30, and reached Stansted Airport at 9.30 too (British Time). From the airport, we took a train into Liverpool Street, left our Luggage and went by tube to Holborn. When we got there we walked around the area and explored. A quick photo by a red phone box, followed by a stroll through Chinatown and theatre land ending in Leicester Square where the London film premiers are held. Then on to Covent Garden where there are many up-market shops in the area and performers of all types. There were violinists, operatic singers but also humorous street performers who interacted with the audience. After some free time we all went to a nearby Pizza Hut for dinner.
That evening we went to see ‘An Inspector Calls’ by J.B Priestley in the Novello Theatre. It was an old fashioned theatre which was quite small. The show was really interesting and entertaining, though quite different from our ideas for the play. Afterwards, we went back to the hotel by tube.
Friday morning we were up bright and early and took the tube to St Paul’s, then walked across the Millenium Bridge to The Globe Theatre. There we saw an exhibition on Shakespeare. Afterwards, a guide took us downstairs to a rehearsal room. The work she did with us was a lot more active than I expected. She helped us to understand more about acting like you mean it (not just reading, but also using actions, emphasis etc.) She did this by having us do all these games (we must have looked quite funny!). One of these was holding one hand behind our back and trying to poke at your partner’s hand, while protecting your own. We also read bits of script while pointing to whoever we were talking to. I thought that it was a fun part of a very fun trip.
In the afternoon, we went to see Love’s Labours Lost at the Globe Theatre. It’s a Shakespeare comedy, and, while some of the humour has vanished into the last 500 years of history, the cases of mistaken identities remain hilarious to this day. I was personally entranced by the story, so much so, in fact, that, despite the theatre being open-air, I didn’t even realise it had been raining steadily throughout the last half of the play, and got rather a rude awakening when we stepped out of the theatre!
One of the funniest parts has to be the bread fight – and the consequences. It comes right before a very serious scene, but the rather crazy pigeons in Southwark evidently didn’t realise the tone had changed, and came hurtling out of the sky to eat the bread scattered about the stage. They kept flapping into the actors’ faces, making it almost impossible for them to deliver their lines properly. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much in my life! All in all, even though I struggled to keep the Princess’s three ladies straight (and, as they were three of the main characters, that wasn’t so brilliant), I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I’d go back to see another play at the Globe at the drop of a hat!
As we left the Globe it was pouring rain so we walked back to St Paul’s took the tube to Oxford Circus and battled through the crowds into Regent Street. There we had a chance to look at the shops. The girl’s headed for Libertys and the boys to Hamleys.
An hour later we met up and walked along Regent Street to Piccadilly Circus, then down Piccadilly to the Hard Rock Café for dinner. The food was great along with the atmosphere. We had a great time and enjoyed ourselves, especially Bishoy and Masha who celebrated their birthdays. This is the original Hard Rock café and some of us went with Mr Gerritsen to see Eric Clapton’s guitar which was how the place started. We looked at much of the memorabilia lining the walls and in the vault, which is where famous musicians, like Madonna, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, The Beatles, Kiss and many others, donate their precious musical items like guitars. Then we went to the Hard Rock Café shop where some of us bought souvenirs from e.g. a hat with Hard Rock Café on it, drum sticks etc. Another late night so when we arrived in Barking, we all piled into three black cabs to take us back to the hotel!
It was a great trip, we learned a lot, had a lot of fun and we all want to go again next year.
